  1. So... Gimp currently has 4 major goals?
  2. - Cairo
  3. - GEGL
  4. - Add named parameters and default values to the PDB
  5. - 6 months development cycle.
  6.
  7. Wouldn't it be easier to treat them as Separate goals for separate
  8. releases? Once Cairo and GEGL (I have no idea for the Parameters feature,
  9. so apologies for not being able to say more about it) have been properly
  10. implemented, Gimp should have the foundations for rolling out features
  11. more quickly. Wanting two at the same time though seems to be asking too
  12. much, and proper implementation of GEGL in my opinion justifies one final
  13. long development cycle.
  14.
  15. Maybe something like this can be considered:
  16.
  17. Gimp 2.6:
  18. - implementation of Cairo (get this out of the way)
  19. - start background work on GEGL, by dedicating more developer resources
  20. (if possible) to actually coding GEGL without necessarily implementing it
  21. yet
  22. - bunch of other easier features to keep people happy
  23. - development cycle: 6 months to a year.
  24.
  25. Gimp 2.8:
  26. - GEGL integration
  27. - the background GEGL work that started with Gimp 2.6 should have paved
  28. the foundations for slightly faster integration
  29. - the development cycle will probably still be long, but this will be the
  30. last "long" release cycle.
  31.
  32. Gimp 3.0+:
  33. - with GEGL properly implemented, from now on, development cycles will be
  34. 6 months.
  35.
  36. Once GEGL has been implemented, the following features seem to be the most
  37. demanded ones:
  38. - CMYK
  39. - 16 bit
  40. - layer effects
  41. - layer groups
  42.
  43. Any one of the above could justify a minor release. Having the first
  44. GEGL-version of Gimp ship with one of the above features would justify the
  45. time spent on it, especially if the developers explain that the other
  46. features will follow fast. Having said first GEGL-version of Gimp ship
  47. with Two of the above would be fantastic.
